Who We Are:
POLICE OFFICERS All LAPD Officers start in patrol. While many Officers will choose to remain in patrol, others put in for promotions or for transfer to specialized divisions after a few years in the field. Patrol is a primary provider of police services to the community and is considered to be the backbone of the LAPD. LAPD is challenging and rewarding. No day in patrol is ever the same or boring. Patrol officers investigate crimes, make arrests, patrol communities to make them safer, work with the community to solve problems, conduct community meetings, mediate disputes, investigate traffic collisions and provide general police services. Among the most difficult challenges faced by Police Officer recruits are the physical requirements of the Police Academy. To assist you in this area, the Los Angeles Police Department offers the Candidate Assistance Program (CAP) to help you get physically fit and get accustomed to the training style you will encounter in the Academy. We strongly encourage all LAPD candidates to take advantage of this program. A career with the LAPD offers: challenge, excitement, variety, teamwork and job satisfaction, opportunities for special assignments and career development, opportunities for promotion, and excellent salary and benefits. The LAPD is looking for the best and brightest individuals - those who have the aptitude and sense of commitment - those who want to help their community, and who want to make a difference. The LAPD's goal is to provide the highest level of professional public service to the wide range of ethnic and culturally diverse groups that make up Los Angeles. As a sworn member of the Los Angeles Police Department, a Police Officer maintains order, enforces laws and ordinances, and protects life and property; issues citations, makes arrests, prepares reports, and provides information to the public and departmental units; works with neighborhood associations and community members as a planner, community organizer, problem solver and information link; and does related work. For many Officers, one of the best rewards of working in a department as big as the LAPD is the fact that they can do many jobs during the course of their career. It is possible to move from division to division, and to learn new skills on the job. As mentioned, all LAPD officers begin in patrol. However, there are opportunities for advancement to different areas such as Specialized Assignments, Sergeants and Detectives, and switch jobs to apply for specialized divisions such as SWAT. Salary $45,226 - $61.095* At all levels of service, LAPD Officers earn competitive salaries. There are regular raises and opportunities for promotion. In addition, Officers have opportunities to earn bonuses based on special skills such as fluency in a foreign language or hazard pay for specialized assignments. *Starting salary based on education and experience.
