DUTIES:  The Nursing Assistant (NA) provides direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN); participates in admission of patients, obtaining and recording vital signs, preparing and positioning the patient; assisting in preparing patients for a variety of routine diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, MRI and examination, such as lumbar puncture, minor surgical procedures, insertion of chest tubes, setting out and passing instruments.  Provides nursing care to patients, such as observing and reporting patients’ behavior, physical complaints and appearance to RN and/or Provider, closely supervises patients and recognized emergency situations.  Sets up of various types of complex medical equipment, enters personal patient care information onto the patient’s records or charts; teaches patients and family members the necessity to continue the procedures for proper health care; provides after-care instructions to patients and family based on patient’s condition; performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION:   GS-5:  The applicant must have one year (1) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in Federal service.  Experience may have been obtained in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home or other medical, patient care facility as a nursing assistant, and must include experience working with medical/surgical, rehabilitation and psychiatric or long-term care patients. Providing personnel nursing care such as pre-and post-operative care and setting up and operating special medical equipments, assisting surgeons and nurses in operating room activities, observing, recording and reporting changes in patient’s behavior and condition to RN or Education Substitution:  Successful completion of a full 4-years course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s with course related to the occupation.

NOTE: *The medical supply technician will be assigned to work primarily day or evening shifts to meet patient workload shifts.  He/she will rotate to all shifts (days, evening, or nights) as needed to ensure staffing coverage.  He/she will also rotate to work weekends as assigned. 

DUTIES:  This position is assigned to the Decontamination and Sterilization Unit (DSU) under Nursing Service.  The Incumbent performs works in the areas, which includes decontamination, preparation and case cart assembly, steris sterilization, sterile storage within the DSU; is responsible for having knowledge of Medical Supply Technician related to standard procedures and processes; assists with quality assurance to ensure proper disassembles supply items to avoid the damage or unnecessary wear; determines methods or devises new processes when traditional practice is not sufficient; packages individual items and assembles trays or sets according to guidelines; selects correct sterilizing medium and cycles and operates sterilizer; performs daily inventories of ward/units supply areas; consults with customers on items in short supply and recommends possible substitutions, checks deliveries for quality, quantity, and price, stores items in accordance with inventory system.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  GS-5: 1 year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service OR completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.  GS-6: 1 year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service.  Specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successful the duties of the position to be filled, which includes processing, assembling, packaging, wrapping and preparing, sterilizing, storing and issuing sterile and non-sterile medical supplies and equipment.

 

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENT:  Applicants must meet the one-year time-in-grade requirement at the GS-6 level by the closing date of this announcement. Time-in-grade restrictions remain in effect.  The U.S. Office of Personnel Management has determined that it will not eliminate TIG restrictions from its regulations at this time
